A ferrous wire (12) moving continuously is passed, after cleaning, through a zinc electrolytic coating bath (32) to deposit a coating of zinc on the wire, and the wire thus coated is then passed through a bath (40) of a molten eutectic alloy of aluminium and zinc kept at a temperature of 390 to 418.8 DEG C and containing from 4 to 6% by weight of Al which has a melting point lower than that of zinc. The wire is drawn and is continuously annealed at a temperature above the melting point of the Zn-Al-Zn alloy coating which may be up to 760 DEG C for a short period sufficient to release the stresses, but not enough to overcome the inhibiting action of aluminium on the effect of iron-zinc alloy, and the annealed wire is quenched. The electrolytic zinc precoating may be eliminated from the temperature of the bath of zinc-aluminium alloy is raised to at least approximately 560 DEG C.

|
