TREATMENT OF MOLTEN BLAST FURNACE SLAG

PURPOSE:To produce vitreous slag having potential hydraulic property at a low cost by rolling molten blast furnace slag to a thin sheet and subjecting forcibly the sheet to dry quick cooling with air or mist. CONSTITUTION:The molten blast furnace slag 9 flowing down from a nozzle 6 of a slag spout 5 onto a moving bed 1 with an endless track which is cooled from below by a water sprayer 2 is rolled to a thin sheet having a prescribed thickness between the bed 1 and revolving rolls 3 which are internally cooled with water; at the same time, air or mist is ejected from force cooling nozzles 4 to cool quickly the sheet to form plate-like vitreous slag 9'. Said slag is transported away by a discharging conveyor 7. The part where the slag 9 is supplied up to the part where the slag solidifies are maintained in a non-oxidative atmosphere using a hood 8 whereby the formation of the crystal layer is further suppressed.
