A press for assembling a fastener to a plate The press (10) comprises a frame (12) and an anvil assembly (20 and 22) carried by said frame (12). A toggle mechanism assembly (26) is carried by the frame (12) and includes two toggle links (50 and 52). A ram (64) is operatively connectable to the toggle links (50 and 52) and pneumatic means (72, 74, 80 and 82) are provided for retracting and extending the toggle links (50 and 52). The pneumatic means (72, 74, 80 and 82) includes a first pneumatic cylinder and piston assembly (80 and 82) for holding the ram (64) in a raised position. Also provided is first pneumatic switch means (160) for terminating the flow of pressurized air to the first pneumatic cylinder (80 and 72), thereby permitting the said ram (64) to drop by gravity. A second pneumatic switch means (170) is activated after a predetermined descent of said ram (64) to energize a second pneumatic cylinder and piston assembly (72 and 74) for extending and retracting said toggle links (50 and 52) and thereby forcefully lower the ram (64) to install the fastener (28) to a plate (30).
