In the case of an optical beam coupled to a waveguide (2) of an integrated optic device by means of a prism coupler (3) or a grating coupler for maximum coupled optical energy the coupling angle ( theta ) must be strictly controlled. This is achieved by controlling the temperature of the device, rather than the conventional mechnical control techniques, since theta is dependent on various parameters, such as the refractive indices of the prism and waveguide, which are themselves temperature dependent. Dynamic control of the optical throughput of the device is thus achievable by means of an electronic feedback loop circuit controlling the temperature of the device accordingly. A solid state laser printer may include a surface acoustic wave device based on such an integrated optic device as a laser beam deflector. A laser beam modulated with the information to be printed is coupled to the waveguide of an acoustic wave device and acoustic waves generated in the waveguide employed to scan the light beam over a photo-sensitive surface moving transversely to the scan direction. |
