Roller contains 20-80 vol.% sintered WC, 15-45 (20-40) vol.% Ni + Co as binder phase, balance at least 10 vol.% cubic carbides of gamma-phase type in which the Ti proportion makes up over 30 wt.% of the metals in the carbide. Resistance to oxidn. is improved while mechanical strength is retained. The rollers resist heat-cracking and fatigue, and heat -cracks are fewer and flatter. The service-life of the rollers and prod., e.g. wire quality, are increased. Co:Ni proportion is 2:1 to 1:2. The binder phase can be alloyed with up to 15 vol.% w.r.t. binder phase, of Cr and/or Mo. Up to 50 (20) vol.% WC can be replaced by MoC.
