In such devices, it is difficult to distinguish unambiguously between shape indicators and error echoes. For the precise location of reflection points, it is therefore proposed to arrange a stationary guide strip, made as a flexible steel ruler (6), along a test region provided. A slide (11) can travel, and can be arrested, on the guide strip. It carries a stop, running transversely to the longitudinal extent of the guide strip, on which a test head is placed in its test position.
