The rotary guard cowl is mounted above the mowing rotor on a swing arm, and can turn only through part of a revolution. The cowl (8) can be spring-loaded, to move back against a stop on coming free of a tree or other obstruction, while its downwards-extending edge can be arranged to admit grass for cutting only over the front half. At the rear it can extend further over the rotor than at the front, and the edge can be deeper, the join between this and the shallower part being oblique.
