[Also in Division C3] Novel amines of formula wherein R is H or C 1-4 alkyl, R 1 , R 2 , X and Y are H, methyl or ethyl and n is 0 or 1 and acid addition salts thereof including penicillin salts, are prepared by the following methods: (a) n = 0, R 1 = R 2 = H by conversion of a 1- carboxyl group via the azide and isocyanate; (b) n = 1, X = Y = R 1 = R 2 = H by reduction of the 1-carboxamide which is prepared from the 1-carboxylic acid; (c) X = R 1 = R 2 = H, Y = methyl or ethyl, n = 1 by reduction of the oxime of the 1-allyl ketone prepared from the 1- carboxylic acid; (d) X = Y = methyl or ethyl by reaction of O-methylhydroxylamine with the Grignard reagent ofα,α-diallyl-1- methyl bromide; (e) compounds wherein R 1 and R 2 are allyl are prepared by allylation of the above products optionally via reduction of the acylamine; and when required, conversion to a salt. 1 - Carboxyl - 4 - R - bicyclo[2.2.2.]oct - 2- enes are prepared by hydrolysis of the ethyl esters which are prepared by reaction of ethylene with a 6-allyl-α-pyrone-3-carboxylic acid ester.α,α,4 - Trimethylbicyclo[2.2.2]oct - 2 - ene - 1- methyl bromide is prepared from HBr and the corresponding alcohol which is obtained by action of 2 moles of methyl magnesium bromide on the 1-carboxylic acid ester. Antiviral pharmaceutical compositions in conventional forms for oral or parenteral administration or in the form of a spray comprise an above novel compound and a suitable carrier therefor.
