The invention relates to preparation of aliphatic esters of carboxylic acids by reacting an olefin, carbon monoxide and an alkanol at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of a cobalt-containing compound as catalyst and a promoter. The promoter is a mixture of substances separated during the working up of a reaction mixture obtained by reacting at elevated temperature and pressure an olefin carbon monoxide and an alkanol in the presence of a cobalt-containing catalyst and pyridine or a non-ortho-substituted alkyl pyridine. The said mixture of substances boils at a temperature higher than that of the aliphatic ester which is the product of the reaction and higher than the pyridine or non-ortho-substituted alkyl pyridine
