Double-piston internal combustion engine as a four-stroke engine with two rigidly connected pistons, four combustion chambers, respectively above and below the pistons in a cylinder, and driving of the pistons from both sides. Due to the rigid connection of the two pistons, the processes in the remaining three combustion chambers during the movement of the pistons following a combustion are driven directly via a crankshaft. This makes possible a quieter design which uses less material and less energy. Side forces on the crankshaft bearings can be avoided by coupling two combustion units in coaxial opposition.
