A silencer for internal combustion engines comprises a tubular casing which is closed at the ends by end caps through which gas channels for the introduction and removal of the combustion gases lead. At least one of the end caps is removable. Arranged in the interior of the casing is an insert which has partition walls dividing the casing into chambers and individual overflow channels connecting the chambers to one another, at least one of the overflow channels being formed in part by the inside wall of the casing and in part by recesses which are provided on the circumference of the insert, are open towards the inside wall of the casing and rest by their edges against the inside wall of the casing. The gas introduction channel, which has a circular cross-section at the inlet, makes a transition inside the casing to an approximately oval cross-section and is bounded in part by the inside wall of the casing and in part by an insert recess with a cross-section having the shape of a half shell.
