In a casting powder for cast steel, in particular for high alloy steels and for continuous casting, with several casting powder components, in particular with CaO, optionally MgO, SiO2 and Al2O3, particularly good surface characteristics of the castings are achieved, also and in particular during continuous casting, if the ratio of the amounts in per cent by weight of basic to acidic casting powder components - the basicity - in particular the ratio of the amounts of CaO/MgO on the one hand to SiO2 on the other hand, is greater than 1.4, namely between 1.4 and 5.0, preferably between 3 and 4, in particular about 3.5.
