Textiles having appearance and properties modified by needling

Appearance and properties of woven or knitted fabrics made from yarns having sizes typical of carded cotton yarns but made by open-ended rotor spinning, jet-spinning, by MJS (Murata-Jet or Sirospun (RTMs) or by friction-spinning are modified by using a needling process to derive a nap of fibre ends or loops drawn from any depth through the thickness of the original material. Pref. the displaced fibre loops or ends are deflected or pulled through the fabric by a multiple needling process pref. at right angles to the plane of the nap. An example fabric made from yarns comprising a 50:50 blend of wool and VIF (DDR standard for chopped monofilaments of regenerated cellulose) had a grammage of 285 g/m2 based on 9.22 warp threads/cm, of 170 tex x 2, and 8.2 weft threads/cm, of 170 tex. The woven fabric was treated using 50-500 needle points/cm2. Process upgrades fabrics made from synthetic fibres having a generally circular section and low pilosity, to enhance the bulk, pilosity, and thermal insulation properties, improve the feel and reduce the slipperyness of the fabrics.
