Bicyclic orthoester amides are prepared by heating N-acyldialkanolamine-bis-alkyl carbonates in the presence of catalytic amounts of alkali metal compounds or alkaline earth metal compounds which give an alkaline reaction, followed by distillation of the reaction mixture. The bicyclic orthoester amides can be used for the preparation of crop protection agents and pharmaceuticals or act as chain elongators and crosslinkers in the preparation of polyurethane.
