Substituted diphenyl ethers of the formula in which R<1> represents hydrogen or trifluoromethyl, R<2> represents hydrogen, halogen, trifluoromethyl or nitro, R<3> represents hydrogen or halogen, R<4> represents hydrogen, halogen or nitro, R<5> represents hydrogen or alkyl having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R<6> represents alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or alkoxyalkyl and X represents oxygen or sulphur, several processes for the preparation of the substances according to the invention, and their use as herbicides. Novel starting substances for the preparation of the compounds according to the invention, and the syntheses of these novel starting substances.
