The invention relates to a process for preparing an active compound for reducing or inhibiting the flammability of organic materials of construction by heating alkali metal salts and a raw material containing essentially silicon oxide to form an alkali metal silicate melt, cooling this melt and then dissolving it in water, and adding acids, or salts which react acidically by hydrolysis, to form the active compound on the organic material by contact therewith.
