Oxidation of low mol. wt. polyolefins obtained by thermal degradation of polyolefins, using a gas contng. both oxygen and ozone, is effected in presence of a low mol. wt. oxidised polyolefin which is present in amount such that the mixture has an acid number >=2. Presence of the low mol. wt. oxidised polyolefin ensures that the products are thermally stable, hence no discolouration and increase of melt viscosity on heating which latter impairs emulsifiability. Also, there is no crosslinking during oxidation caused by the oxygen through the double bonds. Oxidation rate is higher than with conventional processes. Uses include textile dressings, paper coatings in form of emulsion; basic materials for floor polishes.
|
