PURPOSE:To obtain an ignition system free from maintenance by providing a second ignition coil for cleaning an ignition plug. CONSTITUTION:An igniter control circuit 2 carries out the switching of the primary side current of ignition coils 31-34 based on the signal of an ECU 1. First ignition coils 31, 33 take charge of discharging for ignition while second ignition coils 32, 34 take charge of discharging for cleaning ignition plugs 4, and the ignition coils 31, 32 are connected to No.1, No.4 cylinders while ignition coils 33, 34 are connected to No.2, No.3 cylinders in parallel respectively, operating as wired OR. When a starter switch 10 is off and at the time of a cold operation which is detected by a water temp. sensor 9, ignition coils 32, 34 are turned on toward the end of the suction stroke of each of the cylinders to carry out discharging for cleaning, and to remove the carbon of the ignition plugs 4. On the other hand, the ignition coils 31, 33 are discharged at the ignition timing of each condition, at the end of the compression stroke of each of the cylinders.
