A roller (10), particularly for severe applications such as use in textile fibre drawing machines or rice polishing machines, comprises a metal cylinder (12) about the circumferential surface of which a covering (26) of elastomer material is wrapped. The elastomer material of the covering (26) incorporates metal strengthening wires (28, 29).
