A method is described for the hydrogenation of heavy and residue oils in the liquid phase and catalysts used therefor which are obtained both by coking brown coal, in particular in an open hearth furnace, and by brown-coal gasification in a high-temperature Winkler generator, and which are doped with metal compounds, particularly of iron, for further improvement of their catalyst properties.
