PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of pharmaceuticals such as antithrombotic agent, etc., in high yield, by reacting a disilane available as an industrial waste with an aldehyde such as benzaldehyde in the presence of a fluoride such as KF, and hydrolyzing the product with an acid. CONSTITUTION:The 1,2-diarylethane-1,2-diol of formula III can be prepared by reacting the disilane of formula I (R<1>-R<6> are alkyl, alkoxy or aryl) (e.g. hexamethyldisilane) with the aldehyde of formula II (Ar is aromatic group) (e.g. 4-methoxybenzaldehyde) in the presence of a fluoride of formula MF (M is alkali metal or tetraalkylammonium) (e.g. tetrabutylammonium fluoride) in an aprotic polar solvent preferably dimethylsulfoxide, dimethylformamide, etc., and hydrolyzing the reaction product with an acid. The disilane of formula I can be derived easily from the distillation residue obtained as a by-product in the preparation of dimethyldichlorosilane. |
