In a housing (1), filaments (13) which form filter layers (16) are stretched between an upper horizontal grid (5) and a lower horizontal grid (6). Arranged on either side of every filter layer (16) are vertical grids (22) of which at least one is linked to a horizontal displacement drive (23) in order to compact the filter layers (16) for the filtering operation. The filter is regenerated in the uncompacted state, the filter layers (16) being caused to vibrate by a vibration source (20) by means of rods (19). Such a filter, which is designed for gases or liquids, has, on the one hand, a high filtering action and is, on the other hand, easy to regenerate. The filter can be used, in particular, for filtering water, fuel, lubricant, and air and other gases in metallurgical plants, in mining and in the cement, chemical and foodstuffs industries. <IMAGE>
