Certain essential oils, by virtue of their capacity for percutaneous penetration, are used in preparations for external application having a local and/or internal therapeutic action, for example: fat-solvent action, activation of blood circulation, enhanced elimination of metabolites, and the like. The increase in the efficacy of the preparations is proportional to their concentration of essential oils. A cosmetic slimming preparation that combats cellulite cannot be made more effective by a high concentration of essential oils; its smell becomes too strong, and it often becomes too irritant, to be readily marketable. Terpene hydrocarbons - constituents of many essential oils - of general formula C10H16, of molecular weight less than 200 and having a boiling point of between 140 DEG C and 200 DEG C, the use of which in preparations for external application forms the subject of the present invention, have little smell: they may hence be used at high concentration, resulting in a proportional increase in the therapeutic efficacy of the preparations.
