The invention relates to a method for the production of a selectively absorbing layer on the surface of a metallic solar collector, using carbon black. Carbon black with a given primary particle size is dispersed in a binder and applied together with a suitable solvent. alpha -Values of about 90% and epsilon -values of about 40% are achieved. The epsilon -value can be reduced to less than 20% by a heat treatment of the layer. <IMAGE>
