An apparatus for ventilating rooms with damp and/or greasy atmospheres, e.g. large kitchens, is arranged at the inlet of a vent channel and allows after-cleaning of the air and also fire protection. It has a labyrinthine grid which is sprayed with water in a direction opposite to that of the air flow. This water is collected in a collecting container at a lower level and is constantly returned to the spraying device by a duct and a circulating pump, so that the apparatus uses water sparingly. The upper, contaminated water layer is drained off at the collection container by a corresponding overflow, and furthermore a water feed is present which can be automatically controlled, e.g. by a level sensor, so as constantly to replace the contaminated water which is drained off.
