In order to make it possible to determine the carbon level in gas carburisation plants by means of short partial-pressure measuring probes and prevent soot depositing on the probe at the same time, it is proposed to mount the probe (1) at a measuring point outside the reaction chamber (3). To prevent soot deposition, the measuring point zone is heated (13) above the reaction chamber temperature in a line (9) connecting the reaction chamber (3) to the atmosphere, and the escaping carburisation gas is consequently burnt off without an additional burner simply by spontaneous ignition. <IMAGE>
