The invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions intended for oral administration which contain as active substance the seeds, which have been comminuted and swelled in water, of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), to a process for the production thereof and to the use of the comminuted seeds of fenugreek as active substance for treating toxic liver damage and/or for improving liver function or the protective action on the liver and/or for reducing blood alcohol levels in pharmaceutical formulations which can be administered orally. In a special embodiment of the oral pharmaceutical formulation, the latter is in the form of comminuted seeds, which have been swelled in water, of fenugreek, and is in the form of a freeze-dried product.
