A method and an apparatus for removing volatiles such as monomers and solvents remaining in a polymer composed of a thermoplastic resin. A conventional method for separating and removing volatiles by heating a mixture containing volatiles in a polymer using an indirect type heat exchanger and flash-evaporating the heated mixture in a tank requires such a long period of time for heating the mixture that thermal decomposition of the mixture or formation of low molecular weight materials results, thereby deteriorating the quality of the polymer. The method of the present invention enables the acquisition of polymers having high quality while limiting the thermal decomposition or formation of low molecular materials by rapidly heating the mixture to a temperature necessary for flash evaporation within a time short enough so as not to result in deterioration of the polymer, and conducting flash evaporation, thus shortening the mixture heating time.
