In the rolling down of strip material cross-sections of varying width, the rolling pass is begun with the largest cross-sectional width and ended with the smallest cross-sectional width. To achieve an optimum strip profile in the direction of the cross-sectional width, the defined support length for the work roll barrels is set at least approximately to the respective cross-sectional width of the strip material. For this purpose, the barrels of the work rolls are reduced in diameter in the longitudinal region in which they project beyond the respective cross-sectional width by removing material and are thereby relieved relative to one another and relative to the barrel surfaces of the back-up rolls at the periphery of the barrel. This machining away of material at the periphery of the barrel is carried out within the roll stand, a special tool (40) of a tool group being seated in a tool carrier (36', 36'') for each longitudinal region in which material is to be removed from the roll barrel (25'), which tool carrier can be displaced parallel to the roll axis up to a maximum corresponding to the extent of a longitudinal region in which material is to be removed. The various tools (40) of the tool group can be adjusted individually one after the other into a working position relative to the roll barrel (25') using the tool carrier (36', 36''), such that, at a predetermined feed travel (38' 38'') for the tool carrier (36', 36''), each tool (40) machines a predetermined longitudinal region of the roll barrel (25') in which material is to be removed. <IMAGE>
