The invention relates to a device for tilting large pipes (1) disposed on a bottom sleeve (2), having a movable gripping part which can be fixed to the pipe, can be seized by means of a crane or the like and, during lifting, can be pivoted about an axis (10) running transversely to the pipe axis. In order to ensure reliable seizing and tilting of the pipes with especially simple means, the movable gripping part is formed from a supporting arm (3) which can be secured to the outside of the pipe in such a way as to extend parallel to the pipe axis. Allocated to this supporting arm (3) is a hook (15) serving to overlap the top edge of the pipe as well as at least one rope (13) or chain (13') which can be laid around the pipe (1) and can be tensioned by means of a tensioning device (12, 26, 27). Furthermore, a lifting arm (5), articulated on the supporting arm (3) and determining with the articulation point the pivot axis (10), as well as a piston-cylinder unit (6) connected between the supporting arm (3) and the lifting arm (5) are provided, by means of which the tilting operation can be controlled after the pipe is lifted, while dissipating the potential energy of the pipe. <IMAGE>
