Scanning radar aerial with vertically movable field - varied automatically according to phase conditions set at aerial aperture by height error and elevation

The modification to a scanning radar system is intended to simplify the regulation of the directional aerial diagram in the vertical plane. The aerial is rotated, or oscillated, horizontally by a mechanical drive. For the scan in the vertical plane the change in elevation is achieved by phase control through a phase shifter which moves the aerial diagram in the required sense. The permissible error in height can be chosen relative to the actual elevation, and the vertical half value width of the directional diagram is set by this error and the instantaneous elevation. The modification is concerned with the method of varying the vertical half width value. The required variation is generated by varying the adjustable phase conditions at the aerial aperture.
