PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for detecting an object for an automatic focusing image pickup unit capable of surely detecting the object to be brought into focus with a simple mechanism. SOLUTION: A focusing lens 11a forms an image on a CCD 20. The image is projected to a finder through an optical axis different from the optical system. A focal point evaluation range setting means 33 sets plural focal point evaluation ranges previously decided by an object distance based on optical axis deviation between the lens 11a and the finder. The previously decided object distance and the object distance measured by each focal point evaluation range are compared by an object specifying means 35. As the result of the comparison, the object specified by the finder can be surely detected.
