An electrical lighter for installation in motor vehicles for lighting tobacco products, which can also be used for pipe smokers, has an adapter (1) which can be plugged in to a standardised plug-in socket of a motor vehicle. Said adapter is equipped with a housing-like metallic part (2), which is constructed resiliently in the circumferential direction, is slotted in the longitudinal direction at one point (3), for holding a guide sheath (8) in which a slide rod (9) which is subjected to the force of a return spring (8) and has a glow head (10) attached to the front end is guided in a restrictedly displaceable fashion. An insulating block (4) made of ceramic or the like is connected in a positively engaging fashion to the front end of the adapter (1), a bimetal holding and contacting clamp (1) for the glow head (10) being seated in said block and being permanently connected to a contact plate (12) which is positioned on the outside of the front end of the adapter (1). In a longitudinal bore (33) of the slide rod (9) a pipe cleaner (34) is also accommodated in a plug-in fashion. <IMAGE>
