The mechanism can be operated by independent cables from the passenger cabin during a flight or from the floor using a hand lever (16). An automatic position-dependent coupling and engaging device (14) operates a cable between a compensation valve and an engaging lever (15). The hand lever is fixed to a rotating operation lever (18). A rotating notched hook (19) fixed to the operation lever co-operates with the engaging device. The coupling between the engagement and operation or hand levers is raised in the end position, in which the compensation valve is closed, so that the engagement lever assumes a preferred position. By operating the hand lever at the floor, the engagement lever is coupled with the operation lever.
