Present friction material used for brake lining, clutch plate, etc. of an automobile brake system are composed of 20-50% asbestos, 35-60% inorganic fillers, and 30-40% phenol formaldehyde resin. Friction materials are manufd. by substituting total or part of the 35-65% inorganic fillers for cermet powder composed of 65-80% carbon and 20-35% iron.
