Polysaccharides obtained from plants of the Compositae family which are characterised in that they a) have a molecular weight in the range from 35000 to 1000000, b) contain virtually no nitrogen, c) contain, as principal constituents, rhamnoarabinogalactanes, arabinogalactanes and heteroxylanes in addition to some other heteroglycanes, and d) can be eluted in ion exchanger chromatography (DEAE sepharose C1 6B column) and gradient elution with 0-1 mol NaCl solution at a concentration of 0.2-0.6 mol of NaCl solution. o
