A cheap but fancy looking yarn comprises a continuous core thread (1) or filament surrounded by a relatively thick casing (2) made of particulate matl. (3) secured by a flexible binder matl. which may be a polymer, copolymer, elastomer, resin or gum. Such yarns are made by passing the continuous core thread through a suspension of the particulate matl. in a liquid or dissolved form of the binder and drying or curing the coating before opt. repeating the coating process as necessary to obtain an overall diam. at least twice that of the core thread. Pref. several threads or filaments are coated simultaneously by passing obliquely through a vessel having inlet and outlet orifices or slots closely matched to the dimensions of the incoming and outgoing states of the yarn. A multiple vane horizontal rotary agitator pref. turning at 200-600 rpm sweeps the dispersion countercurrent to the passing filaments, so that the entrained particles tend to be aligned with the core axis. Alt. particles are pref. dispersed from a reservoir in which a helical agitator (90) turning about a vertical axis and the tread (70) enters via the base (70) of the reservoir (60) and passes up between divergeant walls before emerging from the top of the reservoir. Used for mfr. of bulky yarns for decorative soft furnishings, etc. utilising low cost or scrap matls. for the particulate fillers, esp. vegetable matter such as rice husks, chaff from flax, sawdust, etc., at throughputs of 1-30 m/min. depending upon the type of binder used.
|
