Automated ashtray is shaped like an inverted saucer with a receptacle fitted with a lid comprising an iris type shutter which can be closed by mechanism powered by a battery driven motor within the rim of the ashtray. The lid is closed automatically in response to sensors sensitive to the wt. and/or ht of a butt. The shutter or iris plates move about vertical pivots and pref. ride on support/guide surfaces coated with a low-friction material such as an annular insert of 'Teflon' (RTM-PTFE).
