The metering feed is for powdery or granular material, having a funnel-shaped hopper for the material and with a conveyor at the discharge end, enclosing an outlet in conjunction with a hopper wall. An adjustable metering plate is mounted at the outlet. A drive (32) imparts a reciprocating movement to the plate (22). The amount of this movement can be set to give the desired rate of metering, and the plate can be arranged to exert a comminuting on any lumps during its downwards stroke.
