An evacuated envelope includes front and back walls and a plurality of spaced, parallel supports between and perpendicular thereto, which form a prurality of parallel channels. In each of the channels, there is at least one beam guide that confines the electrons of the beam but permits selective deflection of the electron beam out of the guide toward a phosphor screen on the inner surface of the front wall. The beam guide includes electrodes on the inner surface of the back wall and either a single grid plate or a pair of spaced, parallel grid plates spaced from and parallel to the back wall.
