The invention creates the possibility of operating the same matrix circuit in two different modes, firstly as an optically and electrically randomly accessible read/write memory and secondly for video reproduction with an unlimited number of intermediate tones, both in black/white and in colour, of moving pictures, on the basis of the application of a demand-activatable discharge stage which is connected to the capacitor memory of the amplifier stage (Fig. 1). In this process, the information content with respect to the tonality of the video signal is stored.
