The invention relates to a typewriter for the lettering of cards of the most diverse materials. In the lettering of such cards, it is important that they can be clamped quickly and reliably, can be oriented in a simple way and do not change their position during the typing operation. Known typewriters are based on conventional typewriters with platens and clamping devices involving an especially high outlay or on those devices in which the cards are clamped and hammers strike these from the rear and press them against a corresponding type. Such systems involve a high outlay, are complicated and also do not provide an exact type image. In contrast to this, the object of the present invention is to provide a typewriter, by means of which it is possible to letter cards in a simple way, with a more exact type image and more quickly than with conventional machines. The object is achieved in that the typewriter has one or more bars which are arranged with the longitudinal axis parallel to the direction of typing of the types and are intended for holding the material to be lettered and of which one is at the same time an abutment for the striking types.
