A retaining device for a sealing or anchoring packing in an anchoring hole, before an anchoring rod is driven into this hole, has a protective cap which covers the front end of the packing. The ogive-shaped protective cap has retaining devices which interact with the wall of the anchoring hole and devices for securing the protective cap on the packing. Such sealing or anchoring packings are especially used for headway timbering by screw connection in mining or other underground work.
