Acetic anhydride and hydrogen iodide can be prepared by the reaction of methyl iodide, methanol or acetic acid, and carbon monoxide under carbonylation conditions using a catalyst comprising a Group VIII metal and a Lewis base promoter. By reacting the hydrogen iodide with methanol to produce methyl iodide and recycling the methyl iodide an integrated process for the production of acetic anhydride can be devised which uses only methanol or methanol and acetic acid as organic feedstocks. The process has the advantage over existing technology that methyl iodide and water produced by the reaction of hydrogen iodide and methanol can be separated without distillation. |
