PURPOSE:To achieve a range finding at a high accuracy by a method wherein a light beam is formed synchronizing a reference pulse to be projected on an object to be detected and a reflected light is received to detect a delay in the phase from the reference pulse so that a distance can be calculated based on the velocity of the light. CONSTITUTION:A reference pulse of a reference pulse generating section 1 is fed to a light projector section 3 through a pulse amplifier 2. The projector section 3 which comprises a light emitting element driven by the refernce pulse and an optical system forms a light beam (P) to be projected on an object 4 to be detected. A reflected light (R) from the object 4 which is irradiated with the beam (P) is received with a receiver section 5 which comprises an optical system and a conversion element. An output of the receiver section 5 is provided to a phase difference detecting section 7 through a receiving amplification section 6. The detecting section 7 detects the delay in the phase from the reference pulse of the reference pulse generting section 1 to be applied to a distance calculating section 8, which calculates the distance to the object 4 based on the velocity (c) of light to be indicated on a display 9. Thus, the distance can be measured at a high accuracy. |
