In known explosion-protected refrigerators, the explosion-protection is effected in that the parts which are considered a source of ignition, for example the compressor and the thermostat, are built in in an explosion-protected construction. The individual explosion-protected parts are expensive, large and heavy. According to the invention, on the other hand, the parts considered a source of ignition, the compressor with electric motor drive (2) and the thermostat (20), are built into a gastight housing (30) so that no connection can exist between the parts considered a source of ignition inside the gastight housing (30) and an explosive atmosphere outside the housing (30). In dimensioning, care is to be taken that the surface temperature of the housing (3) cannot rise to an inadmissibly high level. The cavities existing inside the housing (30) can be foamed or sealed so that penetration of explosive gas mixtures into the housing (30) is reliably excluded. In a preferred embodiment, a two-part liquefier (3) is provided, from which a part of the refrigerant already liquefied is guided back again into the housing (30) to the compressor for cooling thereof. As a result, the compression heat arising from the compressor (2), which is preferably arranged in an oil bath (7), is transported to outside the housing (30) and carried off. <IMAGE>
