An image processing system comprises: a word organised random access memory for storing a digital input image having X rows by Y columns of image points, the memory comprising N memory blocks each having XY/N image point storage locations; storage means for storing the digital input image in the memory in such manner that for consecutive rows of the input image the first image point in each row i (0</= i </= X-1) is stored in a memory block ni (0</= ni </= N-1) according to the following cyclic code: ni+1 =[ni + k]mod N where: ni is the memory block assigned to the first image point in row i, k is an integer 0 < k < N, and no (corresponding to row i=0) may be 0 or any arbitrary integer </= N-1, the subsequent image points in each row i of the input image being stored cyclically in the memory blocks on the basis of a common cycle which has a period N; and retrieval means for retrieving in parallel from any position of the stored input image a kernel of image points of at least one fixed shape whose image points are contained in different memory blocks, the retrieval means comprising means responsive to the address in the input image of one reference image point of the kernel for providing the address of the reference image point in its assigned memory block, and means for modifying where necessary the last mentioned address for supply to those memory blocks containing image points of the kernel other than the reference image point.
