CASE#M3583 IMPROVED ALKALINE CELL ELECTRODES AND METHOD OF PRODUCING THE SAME In an otherwise standard alkaline cell system, having a zinc or cadmium anode and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte, and with the depolarizer comprising a mixture of manganese dioxide or other metal oxide, carbon black or graphite, and an alkaline solution, there is added to the depolarizer mixture a minor quantity of a mixture of silicone polymer oils, metal silicates, preferably aluminum silicate, an emulsifier, water, and a liquid aliphatic hydrocarbon. (The additive to the depolarizer mixture is referred to as a compounded silicone emulsion.) The additive mixture is added to the depolarizer in an amount of about 0.25% to 2% by weight of depolarizer mixture. Improved storage capacity and shelf life of cells which have the improved depolarizer, are noted; and production of the depolarizer may be achieved more easily and efficiently, with lower energy input, resulting in a more stable and uniform depolarizer pellet. The additive may also be included in electrode structures which are formed by compaction, for use in other alkaline cell systems.
|
