PURPOSE:To provide a printer in which a carriage is smoothly braked with no vibration, by a method wherein a magnetic circuit provided with a cavity is provided in proximity to a position at which the moving direction of a carriage is changed, and the carriage is braked by an eddy-curreyt loss induced in a conductor piece fitted to the carriage when changing th moving direction, thereof. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic circuit provided with the cavity 17 is provided in proximity to the position at which the moving direction of the carriage 4 supporting a printing element thereon and reciprocated by a linear motor is changed, and the conductor piece 15 is fixed to the carriage 4. When the polarity of a controlling current passed through a coil is changed, the carriage 4 is reciprocated along a cylindrical yoke 3. When the carriage 4 approaches a coupler 16 at a high speed and the conductor piece 15 passes through the cavity 17 of the magnetic circuit constituted of a ferromagnetic frame 13 and a permanent magnet piece 14, an eddy current is induced in the conductor piece 15, and a braking force is exerted on the carriage 4 to smoothly decelerate the same.
