PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance in high yield even at a relatively low pressure, by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a ruthenium compound, a rhenium compound and an iminium salt compound or a phosphonium salt compound, and having improved activity. CONSTITUTION:CO is reacted with H2 in an aprotic polar solvent under heat and pressure conditions to give an alkane polyol. In the process, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) a ruthenium compound, (B) a rhenium compound and (C) an iminium salt compound or a phosphonium salt compound. The concentrations of the respective components of the catalyst in the reaction system are as follows: 5-10<-4> gram atoms/l expressed in terms of ruthenium atoms and rhenium atoms components (A) and (B), and 50- 10<-4> moles/l component (C), e.g. a quaternary iminium halide or quaternary phosphonium halide. The ratio of the component (B) to the component (A) is 10<-1>-10 expressed in terms of metallic atoms in both. |
